The detection limit for LEL(explosimeter) explosimeters is 2% LEL. That means that when there's an LEL response, the actual quantity is usually greater than 1000 ppmV. Also, the LEL calibration gas is methane, so LEL devices are basically non-responsive to volatile gases from diesel. Underground marsh gas (whose primary component is methane, not fuel station pollutants) also tend to influence LEL devices. Yet after a fuel station's underground storage tank has a leak, the most difficult type of spill to bring under control is diesel pollution. PIDs(photoionization detector) and FIDs(flame ionization detector) can detect most noxious gases at a range of 1 ppm to 10,000 ppm; a tiny reading at the leak detection line means you can discover and solve problems early on.
